Function
1.Belladonna Liquid Extract contains Hyoscyamine, which is used to provide symptomatic relief to various gastrointestinal
disorders including spasms, peptic ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, diverticulitis, pancreatitis, colic and cystitis.
2.Belladonna Liquid Extract has also been used to relieve some heart problems, control some of the symptoms of Parkinson's
disease, as well as for control of respiratory secretions in palliative care.
3.It may be useful in pain control for neuropathic pain treated with opioids as it increases the level of analgesia obtained.
Several mechanisms are thought to contribute to this effect. The closely related drugs atropine and scopolamine and other members
of the anticholinergic drug group like cyclobenzaprine, trihexyphenidyl, and orphenadrine are also used for this purpose.
Application
Cosmetics use
Belladonna drops act as an antimuscarinic, blocking receptors in the muscles of the eye that constrict pupil size. Belladonna is
currently rarely used cosmetically, as it carries the adverse effects of causing minor visual distortions, inability to focus on
near objects, and increased heart rate. Prolonged usage was reputed to cause blindness.
Medicinal use
Belladonna has been used in herbal medicine for centuries as a pain reliever, muscle relaxer, and anti-inflammatory, and to treat
menstrual problems, peptic ulcer disease, histaminic reaction, and motion sickness.
Alternative-medicinal use
Belladonna preparations are used in homeopathy as alleged treatments for various conditions.
